Aboyne Paths and Tracks Group (APTG) is a community-led initiative run by dedicated local volunteers, committed to maintaining, developing, and promoting paths and tracks throughout the Aboyne area. Our mission is to provide a high-quality network of paths and tracks for the enjoyment of local residents and the many visitors who come to experience the area's spectacular nature and scenery. We also aim to inspire more people to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits ofwalking in a beautiful environment.
In June 2025, we proudly published an updated edition of our popular leaflet, featuring eight well-loved local walks. The leaflet includes a detailed map and short route descriptions and a QR code links to detailed descriptions online. Free copies are available at local shops, cafés, and pubs, and a version is displayed on the two village notice boards located opposite the Victory Hall and opposite the Boat Inn.

We host regular work party mornings on the first Saturday of each month. These gatherings bring together a diverse group of over forty dedicated volunteers from across the community, each offering their unique skills and expertise. Most importantly, every volunteer brings boundless enthusiasm!
Everyone is welcome to take part in our work parties. If you’d like to get involved, please email aboynepaths@gmail.com to let us know. These sessions typically focus on path levelling and clearing vegetation encroaching on pathways. Work is only carried out with prior consent from the landowner.
We are especially proud to have recently completed two major projects aimed at enhancing accessibility to local pathways and community connections:
- Castle Woods Paths – Located in the heart of Aboyne, this project has established a well-designed network of accessible paths for wheelchair users and those with physical impairments, improving accessibility while preserving the natural beauty of the woodland environment.
- Glen Tanar-Aboyne Link Path – A newly created, traffic-free route for non-motorised access, connecting Aboyne and Glen Tanar via a safe multi-user path suitable for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.
Both projects were made possible thanks to financial support from Paths for All, Aberdeenshire Council, People's Postcode Lottery Trust, Scottish Landfill Communities Fund, UK Government and the very generous support of many local organisations and individuals. Their contributions were invaluable in bringing these initiatives to life.
APTG is guided by a small committee that meets monthly, and we are always looking for new members to join. If you're interested in supporting our work, we'd love to hear from you!
